The club was packed when Beth and I walked in.  There wasn't a spare inch of floor to dance on, and the thumping beat of the music threatened to split my head wide open.

My heart nosedived.  I must have been crazy to let Beth persuade me to come here.  I'd have been much happier sitting at home and dreaming of all the things that might have been.

"It'll do you good,"  Beth had said in her well-meaning way.  "It's pointless moping over Gerry.  He won't come back, Sally, so you might as well stop wallowing in misery and start living again."

But when you've been going out with someone for a whole year, convinced it's the love of your life, you can't just shake it off when he dumps you.

Yet that's what Gerry had done.  Oh, he'd looked sheepish enough when he'd told me he'd found someone else - but I'd been completely devastated.  For the past two months I'd spent most of my time in my room brooding over him. Now I had to endure this awful club Beth had forced me into!

"Hi," he said with a dazzling smile.  "How d'you fancy winning a bottle of really sexy perfume?"

"No..." I began, trying to put him down lightly.  "I don't think so...sorry, I'm not interested."

"Well, how about a bottle of sparkling wine then?" he went on persistently.  "I can thoroughly recommend it."

"No, really..."  I said again, shaking my head this time to emphasise the point.

He wasn't going to give up easily though.  He went on and on about the wonderful prizes, but it was very obvious it was just an excuse to keep talking to me.  Why couldn't people just leave me alone with my heartbreak?

"All right, give me one then," I said abruptly.

He gave me an odd look as he tore the ticket off and I handed over the money quickly.  With a somewhat defeated 'thank you' he turned to find his next victim, and that's when I saw Beth coming towards me.  As the two of them met Beth's eyes lit up.
